Occupational Health and Safety

When an interpreter is working without a co-interpreter, he or she is entitled to a 15-minute break for each 50 minutes of interpreting. This is as per the ASLIA occupational health and safety guidelines. When planning a program for which an interpreter is required, scheduled breaks need to be incorporated into that program.

  • Two interpreters are required for a 1-hour booking or more, depending on the nature of the assignment (at the discretion of the SLC member). In this instance, interpreters will alternate roles as needed.
  • Depending on the demands of the assignment, three or more interpreters shall be booked for conferences. For conferences with multiple (two or more) streams, interpreter teams will need to be arranged including Deaf Relay Interpreters.

Interpreters working in teams are expected to support their colleague(s) at all times. While on assignment and in the support role, time is to be used to prompt the interpreter who is interpreting.
