Recruitment and Selection of Interpreters
The members of SLC employ a number of part-time interpreters. Most interpreters are employed on a casual needs basis. Employment of Interpreters and allocation of assignments is at the discretion of the Auslan Interpreting Service of Australia (SLC), administered by the members of SLC.
Accreditation
The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) is the body which accredits interpreters in all languages, including Auslan.
SLC members aim to employ NAATI-accredited interpreters only, except in the case of Deaf relay interpreters, for whom no NAATI accreditation currently exists. In the case of Deaf relay interpreters, preference is given as per the relevant SLC member’s internal policy.
In non-metropolitan areas, due to lack of NAATI-accredited Auslan/English Interpreters, assignments will occasionally be undertaken by non-accredited practitioners. This will occur only where the person has been assessed by the SLC member staff as having sufficient skill and experience to undertake the assignment. Following this, the employment of non-accredited practitioners will be at the discretion of the relevant SLC member.
Employment of non-accredited interpreters may be subject to a written commitment to sit for the next available NAATI exam, or within 12 months of employment. Non-accredited practitioners are strongly encouraged by SLC members to obtain NAATI accreditation. Ongoing employment will be at the discretion of the relevant SLC member.
SLC members are committed to the employment of accredited interpreters. In every instance, wherever possible, the Interpreting Service Officers will endeavour to allocate an accredited interpreter. In the event that an unaccredited interpreter is allocated, all parties at the assignment will be informed.
Interpreters employed through SLC and will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement as per their relevant employer’s requirements, and adhere to the Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association Code of Ethics (refer to section 4).
